Jabal al-Nour and the Cave of Hira, Jabal Thawr, Arafat, Muzdalifah and Mina — what each place means and how to plan a Makkah Ziyarat tour.
A Makkah Ziyarat tour connects you with the places where the story of Islam began. Most tours take three to four hours by private car, ideally in the early morning.
Jabal al-Nour and the Cave of Hira
The Mountain of Light lies about 4 km north-east of Masjid al-Haram. Near its summit is the Cave of Hira, where the Prophet ﷺ used to retreat in worship and where the first verses of the Qur'an were revealed: "Read in the name of your Lord who created" (Al-'Alaq 96:1).
The climb takes most visitors around an hour each way on steep steps. Go early, wear good shoes and carry water. Many pilgrims simply view the mountain from below.
Jabal Thawr
To the south of Makkah, Jabal Thawr holds the cave where the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr (ra) sheltered for three nights during the Hijrah to Madinah. The Qur'an refers to it: "…the second of two, when they were in the cave" (At-Tawbah 9:40). The climb is steeper and longer than Jabal al-Nour.
Arafat and Jabal al-Rahmah
About 20 km east of Makkah, the plain of Arafat is where pilgrims stand on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah — the heart of Hajj. Jabal al-Rahmah (the Mount of Mercy) rises in its centre, marked by a white pillar. Outside Hajj days it is quiet and easy to visit.
Muzdalifah and Mina
On the road back you pass Muzdalifah, where Hajj pilgrims spend the night under the open sky, and Mina — the valley of white tents and the Jamarat bridge where the stoning takes place.
Other places often included
- Masjid Aisha (Tan'eem): the nearest point outside the Haram boundary; people staying in Makkah who wish to perform another Umrah enter ihram here.
- Jannat al-Mu'alla: the historic cemetery where Khadijah (ra), the Prophet's first wife, is buried.
- Masjid al-Jinn: linked to the night the jinn listened to the Qur'an.
Etiquette
Ziyarat is a journey of reflection. These places are visited for their history; acts of worship such as touching rocks or tying cloth have no basis in the Sunnah.
